Thanksgiving
by hosessaddles
Have you ever thought about what Thanksgiving means?
It means to be grateful for....
Your lessons with your best friend, your horse,
The tack, care, and medicines you get to keep your horse alive,
Enjoying trail rides,
All of the fun that you and your horse share,
Your horse alone,
because it's amazing to see all the progress that you have made,
So this year, try to remember what Thanksgiving really means, because you should be Thankful of all the time that you can have with your horse,
even if that time is not a lot. | hosessaddles & Phoenix | 2015-11-07 23:06:33 | | If I write my story or poem here will I automatically be entered into the contest?

Sigrid led me into the barn, which was filled with people talking and horses neighing. “This is the training barn, where horses that are being trained go,†she explained. “Hayden will show you the other barns later.†She led Ghost to a spacious stall and closed the door behind him. The horse greedily dug into his grain. “Follow me to the house. I’ll introduce you to your mentor, make you guys some coffee, then it’s time to work!†she said, leading me to a large brick house. She opened the white door and led me into the dining room. There sat a slim, tan boy, who was greedily devouring a plate of hash browns. “Hayden, this is Clare. Clare, this is Hayden. He’ll be showing you around today,†Sigrid introduced us. “Hi,†Hayden said with a small smile. “Hi,†I replied, sitting down across from him. “I’ll get you guys some coffee. Get to know each other,†Sigrid told us, dashing off to the kitchen. “So how long have you been volunteering here?†I asked the boy. “A few years. I came here one summer because I was bored, and had always been interested in horses. This place seemed like a good place to learn about horses and help them, too. Why are you here?†he asked, with genuine curiosity in his sparkling brown eyes. Drat! I made up a lie on the spot. “Um, kinda the same reason as you, I guess. I don’t wanna be bored another summer, and I want to learn more about horses, so… here I am.†I felt bad lying to the kid, but he couldn’t know the real reason I was here. He would think I was some kind of a freak! Hayden nodded. “Cool, cool. So where are you from?†Suddenly, Sigrid burst into the room, carrying two steaming cups of coffee. “Alright, kiddos! Drink your coffee and chat a little bit, but then it’s time to work!†she said with a wink. I grabbed my coffee and took a sip of it. “I’m from the city. What about you?†I asked. “Cool. I’m from around here. My family lives just down the road. Is it nice living in the city?†I nodded. We sat in silence for a few minutes, until both of us had finished drinking our coffee. “Well, let me show you around,†Hayden said, standing up and pushing in his chair.
I followed him outside, and he led me to the training barn. “As you may know, this is the training barn. Horses come here after any physical problems that they may have are taken care of.†The two of us walked through the barn. I looked at the horses, whose bright eyes and sleek faces curiously peered over the stall doors. At the end of the barn was an indoor riding ring. “Here’s the indoor ring. When the weather is bad, we ride in here,†Hayden explained. “To your left is the stairs that lead to the viewing area. Let’s go up.†I followed him up the sturdy stairs. When we reached the top, we had a great view of the indoor riding ring. “There’s a little mini fridge in the corner over there, and, as you can see, there’s chairs and couches for you to sit down in,†Hayden explained, gesturing around the viewing platform. “Okay, cool,†I replied. “Now, let me show you the sick barn,†he said, going back down the stairs. I followed close behind. The two of us walked outside, down the hill, and across the street. “Just follow me. It’s back here, behind those trees.†We walked into the forest, following a well-worn dirt trail. After walking for a few minutes, we reached a clearing. “Here it is! This is where sick or injured horses go while they’re getting better,†Hayden said, pointing to the smaller brown barn. “This is also where you’ll meet your assigned horse, Milo. Follow me,†I followed him into the spacious, airy barn. We stopped at one of the end stalls. “Here he is!†Hayden exclaimed. I peered over the stall door, and was face to face with a little Appaloosa colt. “He was found running wild with his mother on the interstate. Unfortunately, she ran off and hasn’t been found yet. Hopefully, she’ll find her way back to him. Anyways, he’s almost ready to go to the training barn. He was in pretty good shape when he got here; just a few scratches, which have healed really well,†Hayden explained. “Poor baby…†I muttered, looking at the lively foal, who was now trying to scratch an itch on his cheek. “I was told that you have some experience with horses? Do you know how to groom and feed them?†he asked. I shook my head. “Well, I did ride for a few weeks years ago, but I’ve forgotten almost everything that I learned. Not that I learned much.†I let out a little chuckle. Hayden replied with “Okay, well, I’ll give you a refresher course. Follow me into the tack room, and I’ll show you how to groom a horse.â€
It was now 6 p.m., and I was completely worn out. Hayden taught me how to groom a horse, wash a horse, feed a horse, and pick out a stall. “We’re not done yet! Tomorrow, I’ll teach you the basics of riding, which should be fun!†he warned me as I was waiting for my mom to pick me up. “Sounds great…†I murmured sleepily, heavy eyelids closing slightly. I was woken up by the brightness of car headlights. “Well, it looks like my mom’s here. See ya,†I told Hayden, waving good bye. I climbed into the car, getting muck on the leather interior. “So? How was your first day?†mom asked, looking at me in the rearview mirror. “Exhausting…†I groaned. I fell asleep on the commute home, and woke up when we reached our destination. Mom didn’t ask me any more questions, so I just took a hot shower, changed into my comfy pajamas, and crawled into bed. | Otaku_Lady & Red Dragon | 2015-11-14 01:09:38 | | yes just type your entry in the message box below. | Jane Crandal & JB | 2015-11-14 02:33:55 | | can I enter | likeso & Snow White | 2015-11-15 08:14:03 | | Yes just type your story in the message box below. | Jane Crandal & JB | 2015-11-15 21:04:12 | |
