Chapter 5 Wings
By Starwalker123

The sun gleaned brightly into the window of my bed room. I grin Sunday was here. I go into the bathroom and close the door. I shower and change into jodhpurs and a purple shirt. I grab my black rugby phone and tuck it in my pocket. I headed down the stairs and into the kitchen. The note on the table reads,
Kate called to see if you could bring a horse over and play on the low course county cross with her and Shine. Take Decker. Have fun. Your dad and I are out riding Leo and Clancy.
Kate was my best friend and Shine was her 6 year old Gray TB she had gotten from the rescue. I headed outside into the warm blue skied day. I hoop in the ranches red dodge and attach it to the white 2 horse Trailer. I then head into the barn and gather up the tack and grooming things which then go placed in the seat. I walk back into the barn and lead out the white TB. He loads easily and soon we are driving off the opposite way as to town headed for Fox Dale Stables. I pass fields filled with TB’s and stables.
*15 minutes Later*
I drive under the arch reading Fox Dale Stables and down the black top driveway lined with white fenced pastures were horses graze. I pull into the trailer parking lot across from the red with blue trim tin stable. Kate comes racing across to the truck black hair in a mess and brown eyes gleaning. I leap out of the truck and hug my friend I haven’t seen since Friday when school got out.
“So Ready For That Ride?” She says in her most sarcasm riddled tone
“Yeah.”
“Want horse did you bring?”
“Decker.”
“Cool.”
I walk around to the back of the trailer.
“Make yourself useful and grab my tack.” I call at Kate
She grabs the black saddle, Bridle and white pad as well as the brushes. I open the door and back Decker down. The 16.2 hand high horse nickers as we head to the ties at the back of the stable. I tie his red lead to the ring on the wooden rail at the back of the barn. Kate sets my stuff on the pad next to him.
“I’ll go get Shine.”
She walks off and into the barn. I get out a curry comb and start to curry Decker. I turn my head when I hear a sharp raping noise. Kate leads out Shine, Gray with a diamond on her head; she gleams like a newly minted nickel. She is followed by a boy leading a red and white pinto. I look over Shine, she is the same height as Decker.
“Lucy, This is Chase and Redbird, Chase’s 12 and Redbird is 14.”
The boy turns to me eyes the color of a pale storm gray and hair long for a boy brown in color.
“Hi.”
“Nice to meet you Chase.”
“Is it ok if he rides with us?”
I grin at them both, “Why not?”
“Ok.”
With that we turn to the task of grooming our mounts.
*8:15*
I swing into the saddle Chase and Kate are close behind. Decker, Shine and Redbird stand side by side until we are ready to move off. Kate leads the way down the trial, then Chase and last in me . The smells of summer are all around us grass, rain and horses.
“Let’s trot.” Kate calls
“OK.” Chase and I Call Back
The horses spring into a trot the dirt turning under their feet. The breeze whips around us. The calling of sparrows fills the air as we enter oak tree filled woods. The shadows of trees play out around us. After 5 minutes we come out in a clearing and slow to a walk. At the end of the clearing 3 trials enter the woods, the beginner course jumps at a height of 1 foot, the harder course 3 foot jumps, and the last course with height changeable jumps. Kate aims Shine at the beginner course, Redbird and Decker follow after. I grin a I look at the first jump just a few feet up the trial a ditch barely a foot in width with jumps of one foot on both sides. Decker snorts and prances as Kate Calls back,
“Take then we’ll stop and take in the other way before heading for the next jump.”
“Ok.” We Call Back
Kate moves Shine into a canter stride long and smooth. I watch in awn as they soar up and over the jump. Chase follows on Redbird with a matched performance. They go up the trail and turn to watch. I ask Decker for a canter and he leaps into a smooth effortless canter. 1,2,3,4 strides I count then I’m two pointing as he flies over the jump.
“Nice.” Kate and Chase Call
I grin as a Decker trots over to the group.
“Decker’s nice.” Chase Comments
“So is Redbird.”
“I’ve had Redbird for 4 years. I toke lessons before that.”
Shine nickers and pulls at the bit .
“Kate you better go.” I say
“OK.”
With that Shine leaps into a canter headed for the jump.

The Fantastic Mrs. Riley
by ging

The Fantastic Mrs.Riley. She was known everywhere. She was that young very pretty girl who got married, widowed and pregnant in the same year. Her husband was away fighting in Afghanistan and never returned. She had never fully accepted that he was gone. All he had left her was his black horse and their child.

She named the kid Lee Harvey Riley. Lee was fascinated by the horse. He loved it. As soon as he could walk and talk, no he didnt want to go to the park. Nope he wasn't interested in Mario Kart or toddlers football. All he wanted to do was pet the horse, groom him and feed him.

Mrs. Riley was confused but let him do as he liked. She was so caught up in the foggy fantasies that she evoked in her head where her husband was alive. This was her most wistful fantasy:

She was strolling along a quiet country rode wearing a light white dress, in the moonlight. She looked so beautiful with her blonde hair streaming down her back and her cheeks flushed as she anticipated his arrival. And then he was there. Riding on his ebony-coloured horse, a Frisian, who was as handsome as its rider. He was shirtless, and the moonlight flattered his muscles. He dismounted and looked deep into her eyes and said 'You are the most precious thing in this world to me. I would rather die a million deaths than leave you'
He picked her up and put her on the smooth warm back of his Frisian horse. They rode off, their legs warmed from the warmth of the horse's back.
They rode on and on.Then it started to get cold. They dismounted. He held out his hand and whispered her name. And just when she reached out to grab his hand back, he vanished and she was brought back to reality.

Mrs.Riley looked in the mirror. After her husband died, she dyed her beautiful blonde hair brown, and wore only black clothes. The colour of the coat her husband's horse. Sighing she wondered outside to where Lee was feeding her husband's black Frisian horse blades of grass from his tiny hand.
'Mama, what's the name of daddy's horse?'
Mrs.Ripley smiled 'Sweetie, do you remember daddy?'
Lee screwed up his face and though hard 'I remember him sayin' to me to take care of you when he's gone and that he loves me very much'
'Lee, never forget that you understand?'
'Mama, now I know why you think so much. You sit in daddy's old chair and look at somethin' for a real long time. You are lookin' for my daddy arent you?'
'Im sorry he's not here with you right now darling' Mrs. Riley and looked over at the horse who was sniffing a piece of manure sleepily
'Lee, that horse is named Melissa honey'
'Melissa? But why I thought his name was Black Because he's so pretty lookin''
'He's called Melissa because your daddy named him after the woman he loved the most'
She smiled at him and walked back inside the house, went upstairs and put on a light white dress. She walked over to open window and climbed up on the sill, so she was standing.
The breeze rustled her hair which streamed down her back. Mrs.Riley watched her little son patting the horse and blew him a kiss.
And that was her, Melissa Riley.

Unicorn School Part 3
By Dragon Girl

I stared around the dark room, looking for a lamp to light. As I turned my head to the right, my nose bumped against a metal object. Projecting light from my horn, I discovered that it was indeed a lamp. But it wasn't one of the usual lamps my family used to light the house. It was engraved with leaves, moons, and stars, horse shoes, light beams, and even a large and intricate heart. It was like one of the fancy ceremonial lanterns that I had seen at a market. I shuffled into the room, using the heat torch I made at the end of my horn to light the lamp. I could just make out two very large cushions, the feet of them pointing towards me, with smaller cushions arranged at the head. There were four more lamps, one on either side of the two beds. I carefully lit each one, gaping at the sights that became clearer to me. There were two lovely wooden chests for belongings, two large mirrors at either end of the room, and a gorgeous chandelier hanging from the ceiling. 'Your in the wrong place, Kitty!' I told myself. 'This has got to be the room of some high princess or someone!' "Kitty? Is that you?" asked a voice behind me. I threw my head around near my withers and saw Resa. "Oh, it is you! That's a nice surprise! Did you find the principal without any trouble?" I nodded slowly. "Yeah, I did. This is 302, right?" "Of course it is. It says on the door." She looked around the room. "Oh, fiddle sticks. I got a small room. Well, no worries! I'm sure we'll find a way to cope!" she chirped, trotting in. My jaw dropped. "Small?! This room is SMALL?!" I exclaimed. She laughed lightly. "Yes, it is, compared to the other rooms. My bedroom back at home was bigger than this." My own room back at home was the size of one of those cushions. My parents always called it my quarters or my stall. "Which bed would you like? I myself prefer the one to the left, since it's closer to the window, but this is your first year. You should choose. I started years ago, the youngest they'll let you in. I think my parents might have enjoyed sending me away." she chatted, then sighed. "At least this place is better than that old mansion." I pawed the floor. "Erm, I'll take the right, I guess. I really don't care. It's far better than anything I've seen before." I muttered. Resa dropped her saddle bags onto the top of one of the chests. "It's nothing to be ashamed of, Darling." she said. "It doesn't matter whether we're from a huge rick beach side castle or a little cozy farm like yours. I've always wanted to see a farm. They sound so nice, and I've only read about them. Did you have a goat or chickens?" "We have both of those, and a few mini dragons and ducks. We also have a large garden." I murmured. "A GARDEN?! How lovely! I've always wanted one, but Mama insisted that it was far to un lady like." She rolled her eyes. "I like the way farms sound." I placed my small bag of stuff on my cushion and glanced at the mirror. I wasn't a pretty sight at all. Resa looked at my things. "Kitty, is that all you have?" "Mmm hmm." I answered, lifting a comb and trying to brush back some of the mess. "Why, that's barely enough for anything! I'm writing to my parents at once. They'll send you a curry comb and brush. Tell me, how did you manage to get here?" she asked, pulling out a paper and starting to write furiously. "My uncle sponsored me." I said softly. "Oh, is he a nice uncle? I don't have any." I looked at her for a very long time. This was a very curious unicorn. "Well, he is, but I rarely see him. I don't think he and my father get along well." I levitated my class schedule in front of me face. "Did you meet anyone else while you were here?" she asked. "Yes, I met two sisters. One is called Lizzy and the other was Mari. Mari had a stallion friend, I can't remember his name. And there was a very sad looking teacher in a schoolroom on the floor below. And a...another stallion I bumped into." Resa cast me a playful look. "Oooh, do you know his name?" she asked with a smile. "No, I didn't ask. She curiously blinked, then pulled out her own class schedule. I look at mine.

I shivered. What was a 'Physics'? All those huge words were getting to me. I shakily knelt down on my bed, suddenly feeling very homesick, my eyes blurring. This was crazy. I wasn't even going into the first level of magic, and I had no idea what physics was. Resa cast me another glance, her gaze softening. "Oh Kitty, what is it?" she asked, nudging me. "Nothing. The sunlight is hurting my eyes, that all." She looked at my paper. "Oh, well that's ironic! We're in the same classes!" she muttered. "Are you homesick? Or do you not understand something? Or was I being too nosy? Are you sure you don't want the left bed?" I curled up, surprised that I felt like telling her about how I felt when I had just met her. She had a heir about her: one that comforted you, like a mother or a big sister. I missed my own big sister, Ellie, which made me feel even more upset. "I'm a little homesick, I guess. I don't know what physics is, either...are they always this hard?" She left for a moment, then returned with something. "Here, your probably hungry." she said through a small parcel. It was filled with spiced nuts. "I really don't like them, but everyone else in my family does, my brother Loyd for example." I nibbled on them. "It's all right to feel homesick." she explained. "Everyone feels it. I would be shocked if you weren't. Physics is a type of science; don't worry, I really don't know what it is, either. This whole school is pretty hard, but," she knelt down on her front legs, "some of the smartest unicorns graduated form here. It all be worth it." I licked up the nuts. Immediately, I knew why Loyd (whoever he was) loved them so much. They were both sweet and spicy, and they were also nutty and delicious. "Well, we have the whole day off to get situated." said Resa. "Let's see what we can do."

Ride on! Part 1
By: Otaku_Lady

(Author’s Note: I’ve decided to scrap the last story I wrote for the September contest. I felt like it just wasn’t very good. But don’t worry! I’m back with a new story and this is it.)

Your name is Ivy Dale, and one of your family’s horses has just won a race. Of course, you are not interested in this. Your listlessly check your phone, looking for messages from your nonexistent friends. Your dad nudges your arm, and you put the device in the pocket of your designer hoodie. “What?” you ask with a hint of irritation in your voice. Your dad replies. “The new filly has just won. I knew that she would be a good investment. Let’s go down and get our pictures taken with the new jockey.” You smooth your dyed, reddish-gold hair down and jog over to where the leggy equine, the rest of your family, and about a million photographers are milling about. You quietly slip in between your mom and your dad. “Now, smile big!” the photographer exclaims. You gave the camera the white, fake smile that you usually reserve for occasions like this. The lens clicks, the camera flashes, and the dreaded photo op is over. You walk to the horse trailer and prepare to go home. All of a sudden, the jockey comes up next to you. “Hi!” he exclaims. You jump back in alarm. You don’t know it yet, but this young man will become one of the best friends you will ever have.

“Lucky” Me A True Story
By, ksanimalgirl

Summer had just started and there was nothing to do. Every day I lazed around at home thinking about horses, drawing horses, and even looking at horses for sale!! I was desperate for a horse of my own, but my parents always said, “No, they cost too much….” I had wanted a horse since I was a little girl, it had always been my dream. I would do anything to own a horse, but I was starting to think it would never happen….
One day, my mom came home from work and told me someone had something for sale. Curious, I asked her who was selling what. She told me her friend, who has lots of her own horses, was selling three horses for $100 each. She said they were given to her as rescue horses and she couldn’t keep them. My eyes lit up and I asked my mom, jokingly, if she was buying one. She said, “Well, it’s really hard to pass up this offer because they’re so cheap and I know you’ve always wanted a horse….” Then my heart started pounding and to check that I wasn’t hearing things, I asked, “So, I MIGHT be getting a HORSE of my own?” My mom simply replied by shrugging her shoulders.
There was A LOT of discussion about this amazing opportunity. Soon there were only two horses left, one had been sold. I started to worry. What if we didn’t claim a horse in time? What if I didn’t get a horse? This was my opportunity to get a horse, CHEAP! Eventually, my mom’s friend told us she was going to keep one of the horses for her son. My mind was going crazy! There was only one horse left!
A few days later, my mom was texting her friend, and talking to my dad about the horse. Suddenly, I realized, they were telling her to keep him for me! I was so excited! It was my dream come true! We got a picture of my horse from my mom’s friend. It was love at first sight. He was a beautiful, bay, quarter horse gelding, only two and a half years old. Now, I couldn’t wait to go see him and to name him!!!
I thought and thought and thought about names for my baby, but every time I thought I liked something, I would accidentally say another name instead. After the third try, the name I kept saying without realizing, I decided to keep. After all, we were both extremely ‘lucky,’ right?
About a week later, we got to go and see Lucky for the first time. He came right up to me like he knew me. I knew then that we would make a good team. I couldn’t wait to get closer to him and take care of him myself. I got to walk him around a little bit that day. I was so excited! He nuzzled me and even sneezed on me. I dreaded leaving.
Eventually, we did have to leave. It was sad for me because I had just met my horse and already had to go, but I did get to go back the next week! I have gotten to know Lucky, and I will help train him when the time comes to break him. For right now, I go visit him as much as possible and give him all my love. I’m so happy my dream came true! Yours can too!!!

Storm Horse CHAPTER 2
by: lyki4484

Thunder woke up to a bright sun shining down on her. The sun was much more brighter on the earth than it was in the clouds. She got up and looked around, Surrounding her were trees, to her left was a river, and to the right was a large grassland. Thunder felt her first feeling being a mortal: alive. Her throat was a little dry which was new.
But everything was new. Real feelings, the colors, and herself. Her reflection in the river was amazing. Thunder had a pitch-black coat, black hooves, black mane and tail, and a white stripe down her head. The water in the river didn't just show her reflection, but it moistened her dry throat. This was the substance her mother, Rain, could make fall out of the sky. The sky. The spirit herd of storms. Her mother. The other colts. And Tornado's troubled face. All of these swam around in her mind with mixed emotions.
A horse's whinny filled the air. Startled from her thoughts, Thunder galloped behind a bush and peeked out. There in the grassland, a large herd was in panic as a long, yellow creature crept towards them. The herd leader, a white stallion, neighed, "BEAT IT!" to the creature. The creature only growled. Thunder noticed its long, sharp claws. What did this creature want from this horse herd?
The white stallion pinned his ears back, reared, and neighed a battle cry. The creature pounced on the stallion. The claws dug into the horse's sides.
"NO!" Thunder screamed.
Thunder from the clouds rumbled so hard, the ground shook. The creature ran away in fear, leaving its breakfast standing in shock.
Thunder realized she was out in the grassland away of her hiding place.
"That was weird. Where did that thunder come from?" said the stallion to Thunder.
Thunder explained her history. She told her life as a spirit in the sky, how she was named after thunder, her sending down from the herd, and everything in between. But it was obvious the stallion wasn't going to buy this silly filly's "made up" story. By the time she was finished with her story, the herd had rushed over to tend to their leader. The white stallion decided to adopt Thunder, this lost orphan, for his herd collection.
For a couple of weeks, Thunder was taught by Jack, the white stallion's name, survival, about earth, herd rules, and other information.
One sunny, bright day, the herd was grazing, playing and horsing around when a loud sound came. Flying, metal machines came overhead.
Helicopters.
"SCRAMBLE!" commanded Jack.
Nets came down as the herd panicked and scrambled.
A round-up to help keep the wild horse population under control.
And we were next.

The Show
By: CowGirl7

It was a frosty morning, I was touching up the braids on Nollie, my black welsh pony mare. “There, that’s perfect!” I told her, and kissed her on the cheek. My big sister yelled from the next stall down “Keep it down! I’m trying to concentrate here!”. I just rolled my eyes and pulled Nollie’s hood carefully over her neatly braided mane. “If you had practiced enough, you wouldn’t have to get so upset about a change in the dressage pattern!” I yelled back to her. Rebecca never practices enough, I thought to myself, and I have to pay for it!
Dad came out, “OK let’s load these ponies up!” I led Nollie out of her stall and outside, followed by my sister. “Oh no!” Rebecca screamed as Chase splashed through the water, getting her show pants and his white legs all muddy, “I will never win this show!” “Calm down!” dad said “It’s alright, we will just rinse his legs off when we get there, and we are already late so let’s go!” Rebecca looked so mad “What about my clothes?” We ignored her and got into the truck. She sighed and jumped in the passenger seat.
Show jumping was about to start when we got there, so as Rebecca and Dad rinsed, I saddled up and warmed Nollie up. Dad called me over and gave me my number. “Your 63 and thirteen and under doesn’t start until after the peewee class.” I sighed relief, and was about to continue trotting when the announcer said “Peewee class is not going because of the lack of competitors. Up next for thirteen and under show jumping: number 63” At first I thought oh I’d better go near the arena so that I’ll be close for my turn, but then I looked at my number. “I’m 63!” I trotted off to the big arena where the jumps looked bigger and scarier than ever. I walked the course and felt a little better. Then it was time to start, I patted Nollie’s black neck and kissed for her to canter.
We took off at a quick canter, faster than I wanted and barley cleared the first jump. We turned and switched leads too close to the next jump and landed unbalanced. Luckily, Nollie recovered, but a little too quickly and was going so fast that she knocked down a rail on the next jump. After that, she realized that she was going too fast and slowed down. We cleared the rest of the jumps! I was so happy, not because she did so well, because she caught her mistake and fixed it! I hugged her neck and walked out of the arena. Dad greeted me with a high five and a “You did great!” Rebecca just rolled her eyes.
I ended up getting second! Rebecca got fourth on her dressage test. I was so happy! I learned to recognize that Nollie was trying her hardest and fixed her mistake, which is something that I need to work on! I hope that other people will recognize when their pony is really trying their hardest, even if you didn’t win first place!

Unsold
by 66luvponies

Anticipation hung in the air as the bold chestnut horse was lead around the ring. the auctioneer began to talk, "aand this one, Number 22.Got a gorgeus topline on 'im, only just broken to saddle. Could make a fine competition horse. Do i hear 50? 60? 80? 100? all done at 100? going,going.." he slammed his hammer down on he table "Sold to the man on my right. Next one in please." The girl who had been leading the flighty chestnut gelding around the ring hand his leadrope over to a brisk man in a tweed jacket and then went to collect the next horse. the moment she saw him, she knew he was special. A norwegian Fjord, nervous and jittery, but he had a remarkable wisdom in his deep brown eyes. his mane, untrimmed, bounced as he jogged beside her, the black and cream hairs stroking his neck as he bounded forwards. The auctioneer coughed subtly and then resumed his chatter. But he seemed lost for anything to say. "this is number 23, do i have 30? 20? 15?" the audience remained silent, no one raised a hand. "10?" no one moved. "Unsold."

The next the girl saw of the horse was a stable hand pushing him roughly into a stable. "Jilly?" the stable hand called to her. "take this horse to the ring pens. They're givin' him another round tommorow, to try to sell 'im." Jill bristled in anger at the groom's slurred voice and rough manner, but she stayed silent and led the horse away. "What's his name?" she called after the groom. "Gust." replied the groom, with a sly smile. "and he's not lookin' good to me. They'll sell 'im for pennies, you see if they don't." he chuckled to himself and strode back down to the stables. jill stroked the cream coloured pony's neck soothingly. in some ways, the groom was right. Gust didn't sell. sale after sale, no one dared move incase they were mistaken for bidding. Eventually, they decided that enough, was enough. "Turn 'im out." instructed a surly groom. "when e's feral enough, we're releasing 'im." Jill was shocked. She couldn't let him go. In his stable, she brushed him down, and then had an impulse to so something. Using his mane as a mounting block, she swung lightly onto his back, he didn't flinch. She held a hank of mane and rode him around the stable. She cantered him in the feilds, she jumped, she galloped, and by the end, they were two lifeforms, living, breathing, dreaming, as one.

Gust had one last auction before he was turned out. The auctioneer fained enthusiasm as he watched the horse in the ring. "Do i hear 30? 20? 10?" and as he said that, jill , in the ring, raised her hand. Members of the audience sniggered, but the auctioneer wasn't fazed. "No one?" Jill raised her hand again. "Umm, Is that a bid?" she nodded "Then, at 10, looking for 20? No? Going, Going, sold!"
