Free Forever
As I wandered down the street with my puppy, Sam, a small flicker shot onto the road and struggled to get up.
"That's m-my f-f-f-foal!" I gently said.
"Well you better be more careful!" A rough voice scolded behind me.
A policeman was gazing at me, as I thought of something to reply of.
" I'll take him home now, and I shall look after him more carefully."
But I shan't. I thought. I shall go into The Windmill (my home) and nurture him for the rest of his life. But as I got home, I saw Mother, laid down on the wooden floorboard. Father was at work,
and I hadn't trained Sammy yet. The small, palamino foal looked up on me. The gaze in her eyes felt so soothing and relaxing. That was it! The animals and me were going to work together as a team.
Several hours later, Mother woke up.
"W-W-where am I?" She said, confused as a lamb at the bus stop.
I just tapped her nose and winked. The foal? Oh, she's in the big field, because she's free forever!

The Golden Brumby
By: Moody Dolphin
Chapter 1: Finding Brumbies
Blackness carpeted the silent sky as the wind whistled through the trees, flapping Leah’s hair against her face. The brumbies were coming. She could feel it.
Leah was only seven. She was still young and hopeless. But she loved horses, especially brumbies. Sometimes she wondered why her father’s farm was just full of cattle. Cows were boring. Horses were exciting. Brumbies were full of adventure.
John’s head seemed to be in the hills and headlands, thinking about something as the family ate out on the veranda. He said something, much to Leah’s surprise. He rarely said anything at dinner.
“We could use a horse”, he grunted that night. “They would help with the cattle. But we would need someone to ride it.” He grinned at Leah. “Who do you think I’m thinking of, Leah?”
She jumped up and down with excitement. “Really, Daddy? Will I get my very own horsy?”
“Sure thing, love. What breed do you want?”
“I want a brumby, Daddy.”
“A brumby?!”
“Yeah, you know a wild horsy!”
“I dunno, love. It would be hard to train a brumby.”
“YOU can train it!”
“I’m not so sure about that. I haven’t trained a horse in a long time. Maybe I’ve lost my taste.”
“Please??”
John laughed. “Ok, Leah. We’ll try to catch a brumby. Leila, what do you think?”
Leila grinned. “Go for it, John. Just promise me something, Leah- give us time. It might take a long time to catch a brumby.”
Leah wanted a brumby so much that she didn’t care about the wait. She danced around the table as happiness fizzed inside her like Coke. “Thanks Mummy! Thanks Daddy! I’m gonna have a brumby!”
Leah could barely sleep that night. The happy Coke that fizzed inside her at dinner was still there. The words of her father tumbled around her head.
“Ok, Leah. We’ll try to catch a brumby.”
The more it tumbled, the wider Leah’s smile got. She would be the first in her family and school to own a brumby. How cool! Leah Russel, the most unpopular girl in school is going to have a brumby!
A pure white brumby. With dark sparkling eyes and a long, flowing, shiny mane. Everyone would want to talk to her. Everyone would learn to love horses and how to ride. Soon, Leah would have people to ride with-friends. She wished she had friends.
Then Leah thought about what her brumby would be named. But there were just so many choices! She couldn’t choose. They were all too good. And the personalities! That was the hardest part. All horses were unpredictable. She didn’t know what her brumby would be like.
Leah yawned. “I’m gonna have a brumby”, she muttered as Johns snoring rocked her gently to sleep and her brumby fantasies turned into brumby dreams.
Hoof beats awoke the child. Leah jumped up with a start. “Hoof beats!” she cried “Galloping hoof beats mean brumbies! I might get my brumby tonight!” She looked out the window. In the far headlands with bush covered hills there were one two, three! Countless brumbies. Their hooves scraped the dirt on the hard Australian ground. The white horses glowed in the moonlight like stars that fell out of the starlit sky.
“Daddy! Mummy!” Leah shouted at the next room. “The brumbies are coming! Come! Come quickly!”
John and Leila emerged from the room with binoculars in their hands and their hair all crazy.
John was the first to look through his binoculars . “Well, I’d be danged! They are brumbies! Have a look at them, Leila. Just look at them Leah. Their beautiful.”
Leila looked through her binoculars. “Leah, John”, she said, peering through them. “Two brumbies are coming near our paddocks! Leah, you better have a look.”
For one second, Leah suddenly stopped breathing. A pair of brumbies was coming to their paddocks? It had to be a dream. She took the binoculars from her mother and looked through them excitedly. Sure enough, a pinto and a palomino were galloping straight towards the Russel’s farm. They seemed pretty young, but they were brave enough to go without their mothers.
Their manes and tails flew in the wind like flags on a windy day. Both of them trotted into one of the paddocks. The palomino stared into the feed shed and whinnied at her pinto pal. Together the cantered into it and snatched greedily at the sweet, juicy hay. Leah giggled. “The horsies are stealing their dinner!”
The palomino stuck its head out of the feed shed. She nickered at the pinto. Then with her mouth full of hay and her small head slightly cocked, she stared at Leah dead in the eye, like she was the fattest, most juiciest carrot.
For one split second, nothing but the two of them existed
Then the scene fell apart.
Something like a brown bullet shot out from the barn and dashed into the paddock. It barked at the brumbies and scared them away. They galloped back into the bush with their ears pinned back and tails up high with fear, waving like striking flames of horse hair. They took a moment to look back, and in a second, they were swallowed up by the bush.
John swore out loud. He angrily marched out into the paddocks and grabbed the dog by the scruff.
“You morgal of a dog! You scared our brumbies away!”
Leah barely heard the sounds of her father cursing and screaming at Skipper. She was to busy with her own tangled thoughts. That funny little look that the golden brumby gave her before Skipper scared it away, it just seemed to mean something, but she just couldn’t figure out what.
It was getting late. Leila could tell.
She looked nervously at the clock. It was one AM in the morning. Leah should get back to bed.
“Come on, Leah. We better get back to bed before your father takes it to another level,” Leila said gently to her tired seven year old."And you don't know what Daddy will do."
Leah didn’t answer. She was still staring out the window, into the bush and out into the mountains. The brumbies would be there by now.
“Leah?” Leila snapped her fingers in front of Leah’s face. “Time to go to bed now.”
“Huh? Oh, ok Mummy.”
She yawned.
“See, there’s your ticket. Now hit the hay.”
Leila gently pushed Leah into her bed.
“Sweet dreams.”
Leah closed her eyes and blacked out.

Chocolate

Chapter 1 Meat and Bones
"Have you gone to the cave lately?" asked Tornado with a shiver.
"Y-yes". said Sugar."There is meat and bones lying at the entrance".
"This is something to talk to Emma about." decided Starlight.
On a vacation, when the horses had gone to the cool cave to get out of the heat, they had heard a low, savage, growl. Very frightened, they had galloped away. While they ran, Sugar had noticed several pieces of meat with bones scattered about the rocks. They were in safety now, or so they hoped, but they were still unsure.
"I have a feeling my babies are in danger." said Princess Beauty. Emma, the horses' owner, agreed to investigate.
The next day a bear (so that's what the growling was!) came and gruffly introduced himself as Chocolate. "Would you like to be friends?" he asked slyly.
"W-we will t-think about it". said Sugar, looking ready to cry.
Chapter 2 A Plan
Sugar and the others decided they needed a test to decide if Chocolate was trustworthy or not. Their test was to see if Chocolate would attack.
"Let's turn our backs on the cave and pretend to be grazing." Starlight suggested.
"But remember to keep your eyes and ears alert!" Sugar reminded them.
So they turned their backs to the cave, pretended to be grazing and waited. And waited. When they where just about to give up they heard footsteps creeping up behind them. The horses whirled around but they just saw Chocolate's heels as he ran away. They all decided to think overnight and tell their ideas in the morning.
That night, Princess Beauty's foals were asleep. Well, all of them were asleep but one. That was Polly. She tossed and turned in her straw bed, disturbing Blackie, Polly's brother.
"Whats the matter, Polly?" he asked.
"Look!" wailed Polly.
There, at the door of the barn was a pair of two shining eyes and a set of gleaming teeth. Spice, Polly's other brother, was awake by now.
"Wake Mama." he mouthed to Blackie.
Blackie kicked Princess Beauty's stomach.
"Why did you do that, dear?" she asked.
Chapter 3 Chocolate?
"What's that, Mother?" asked Blackie.
Princess Beauty gasped. "Wake the others." she said hurriedly but quietly.
Starlight, the big, powerful stallion leaped to his feet as soon as he was woken. As soon as he saw the eyes and teeth he leaped at them with a roar of rage. It seemed to be a bear, but they couldn't know for sure since it was dark.
When it was morning, Princess, Polly, Blackie, Spice, and Starlight explained what they saw. They decided to ask Emma to draw a picture for them and piece together what they had seen.
"We all saw shining eyes and teeth." said Blackie. Emma drew that.
"And he was big and brown and shaggy." said Polly.
"The only thing it looks like is…" Sugar said.
"CHOCOLATE!!" everyone exclaimed.
Starlight and Tornado went up to the cave to see Chocolate. "You must come into the herd NOW." said Tornado. Chocolate agreed.
Chapter 4 Chocolate, hungry?
"Was that you Polly and Blackie saw last night?" asked Sugar suspiciously.
Everyones eyes were on Chocolate. Chocolate hesitated. Big, strong horses were all around him.
"Yes." he said slowly."Well what I mean is..." and he started rushing through things.
"Wait. Slow down." said Starlight.
Then more slowly he talked about how he hadn't eaten in days, maybe weeks, and he was very hungry.
"Well maybe we can help you with that." It was Emma.
"How?" everyone questioned.
"We have a creek full of trout back home." she paused, then continued."Chocolate, this is only our vacation home. You can can come with us when we go back."
Tornado started pacing. The other horses started pawing the ground. They didn't trust Chocolate yet.
"I am sorry for trying to attack your little one. I thought you were just an ordinary bunch of horses," Chocolate looked around at the circle of horses and smiled.
"But you aren't."

Capture

Dusty awoke with a start. She shook the sleep away and called for Sandy, her best friend. Sandy trotted in."I know you are sick, but I need to graze too!" Sandy complained. Just then, human shouts sounded.
And it all went black.
--------A day later----------
Sandy and Dusty awoke again. Dusty was an escape artist. She struggled to her hooves and nibbled at the lock. She got it open and worked at Sandy's. Just then, the humans ran in, shouting shrilly.
Sandy and Dusty bolted, and soon the humans were off their tails. They slowed to a canter, then a trot. "That was close!" Dusty exclaimed, sweating."Agreed, sista!" Sandy said.
